I lived in Charlotte during the glory years of the PTL Club. My Mom and I used to watch just to see Tammy Faye. She was the real show. Jim Bakker was the almost forgettable straight man. He would have been nothing without her. She'd put on her puppet shows, sing a warbly hymn and then invariably cry over someone's plight. Even though I was an outsider to televangelism, she was spellbinding to watch. It took me years of watching to figure out if she was real or not. It turns out she was.

I believe with 100% certainty that Tammy Faye was genuine in what she thought, believed and did in life. She did not have any ulterior motives. What you saw was what you got. Back in the '80's, she was one of the first to minister to AIDS patients, in a time when the disease wasn't even officially recognized by President Reagan.

Tammy Faye loved everyone. But not everyone loved Tammy Faye. The Charlotte Observer would frequently attack her with accounts of shopping sprees, air conditioned doghouses and other extravagant lifestyle choices. She just believed that it was the reward of a life lived the right way, believing in God. It was the Observer that would eventually bring the PTL empire down. Tammy endured years of public ridicule during this time.

I ran into Tammy Faye at the Southpark Mall one day, when I was there for lunch. I worked right across the street at Gold Bond Building Products. She was surprisingly tiny in person, but always larger than life. She always had a smile and a kind word for everyone who acknowledged her. She always had her head held high.

Life was not totally kind or fair to Tammy Faye. The end of the PTL Club, her marriage to Jim Bakker and years of battling cancer took their toll. She was left a skeletal 65 pounds last week when she appeared on Larry King, makeup and all. Pride and humor still intact. Tears rolled down my cheeks as I witnessed this remarkable woman's courage.

May God bless and keep you, Tammy Faye. Your courage, humor and dignity will always be remembered. You gave us a lot. You gave us an example of grace.

I know Tammy is in heaven now and I know that she is looking down on all of us and my hope is that she is at peace, no pain and that she gets that hamburger and fries that she wanted so bad. She was a wonderful person, loved her Lord and was a great inspiration to me. God watch over you and yours.

Tammy, I know you're with God now, but your spirit can still receive this message from my heart. You light up the world and I need to tell you that God used you to show me critical spiritual principles, that no one else could have taught me. Your passing from this realm taught me the most powerful lesson of all--that we go straight to God, without having to earn it. Because, though I love Jesus, I was caught up in some Eastern philosophy that teaches we have to work our way through many lives and levels of heaven before we can be with God. As the apostle Paul said, spiritual things must be spiritually discerned. And my spirit knows you are with God now, not just one step closer to God. Amen! And Joy To The World! Thank you for your love, grace, and courage to love everyone, in spite of the ramifications and persecution. Thank you for displaying true class.
Every day I hear your voice, singing like only you can sing: "We're blessed, we're blessed, we are blessed!" Thank you. I love you.
